Information and History.

The lake is a 64 mile long reservoir with 415 miles of largely undeveloped shoreline. It has 18,200 acres of deep, pure water – the ideal habitat for many species of fish. It offers a wide variety of sporting opportunities including boating, jet skiing, fishing, water-skiing, camping, picnicking, hiking and swimming.

It is located in middle Tennessee on the Cumberland Plateau. The surrounding counties include Smith, Putnam, DeKalb, Warren and White Counties. The major tributaries flowing into it are the Caney Fork River, Collins River, Rocky River, and the Falling Water.

The lake was constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1949 and was built as a multi-purpose project for development of water resources including electricity production and flood control. The Dam was completed in 1948 and is 260 feet high. It is constructed with eight gates, each being 50 ft. wide.

The lake has a storage capacity of 762,000-acre feet of water, with a maximum depth of 190 feet. The water shed area is 2,174 square miles. Visibility in the lake ranges from 3.5 feet to 6 feet in the summer months.

The TWRA and local anglers have placed many fish attractors and brush piles throughout, which adds to making the Lake excellent for fishing. Abundant in the lake are smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, striped bass (white bass), catfish, bluegill, and walleye. The lake also offers brown trout, rainbow trout, paddlefish, spotted bass, and three types of crappie. The Tennessee state record spotted bass was caught here in 1989 weighing 5 lbs. 8 oz.

The Area has 3 gorgeous waterfalls and many excellent places to hike, swim, and camp. Also there are 8 marinas, 5 restaurants, 3 state parks, 9 Army Corps recreation areas, and the Joe L. Evins Appalachian Center for the Crafts.

A main attraction is Edgar Evins State Park, which encompasses approximately 6,000 acres on the shores of the Reservoir. It provides excellent recreational opportunities and accommodations on one of the most beautiful reservoirs in Tennessee. The park was named in memory of James Edgar Evins, an outstanding leader and former state senator who was instrumental in the development of the Dam and Reservoir. Mr. Evins was the father of former U.S. Senator, Joe L. Evins.

Another attraction to be seen by the water is Burgess Falls and Fancher Falls.
