Swim Area Information

Swimming on Center Hill Lake is one of the more popular water-based activities. Swimming is prohibited at launching ramps, mooring points, marinas, public docks, and posted areas. It is allowed elsewhere, but for safety's sake please swim only in specifically designated areas. These areas are much safer as they are off-limits to boaters of all kinds. They are surrounded by “restricted area” buoys and a floating orange pipeline. The Corps of Engineers operates three such swim areas on Center Hill: Ragland Bottom Recreation Area (Day Use), Floating Mill Day Use and Floating Mill Campground (the latter is open to registered campers only). All three have sand beaches where pets are prohibited. At the two Day Use Areas there is a nominal Day Use Fee. No pets are allowed at these two areas. Near each day use beach are playgrounds, picnic sites, group shelters, boat launching ramps, and bathrooms.

Important Information

Always remember to Never swim near boats, Personal Watercraft, or any other Marine Craft powered by a motor as you could become injured or even Killed!
Always wear a life vest when in the water, even if you are simply swimming.
There are hundreds of people each year who underestimate the depth of the lake, and attempt to swim further than they are able. We want you to come back to center hill, and we don't mean in a pine box!

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Center Hill Lake charges a day use fee at selected recreation areas.  The recreation areas on Center Hill Lake charging these fees are Floating Mill Park, Ragland Bottom, and Hurricane Bridge.  These areas offer sand swimming beaches, playgrounds, launching ramps, bathrooms, picnic sites and picnic shelters.  The fees for 2004 at Floating Mill and Ragland Bottom are $4.00 per vehicle regardless of type of use or size of group.  Persons walking into a recreation area are charged $1.00 per person per day (children under 12 are free).  Hurricane Bridge does not have a swimming area or a playground, and the day use fee of $3.00 is applied only to those using the boat launching ramp.  Golden Age and Golden Access Passes are honored for a 50% discount on these fees. Payment of the fee will permit the use of similar day use facilities at any Corps project on the date of payment.  A paid camping permit from a Corps operated campground will entitle the holder to use any designated day use facility without paying the day user fee on the day for which the camping permit is valid.

Annual Passes

Day Use Annual Passes are available for sale at the Center Hill Lake Resource Manager’s Office near the Center Hill Dam, or at any of the three recreation areas mentioned above.  Annual Passes cost $30.00 and $15.00 for a duplicate.  A half-price discount is given for the holder of a Golden Age and Golden Access Pasport.  The Annual Pass is good at all similar day use facilities at any Corps project.

Note: Not all recreational facilities on Center Hill Lake are operated by the Corps of Engineers and thus the recreational fees charged, if any, are not necessarily compatible.  Therefore, a camping permit or an Access Fee pass from Edgar Evins State Park will not admit you into Floating Mill Recreation Area.  An Annual Pass from a Marina that charges a launching fee will not admit you to launch at Hurricane Bridge Recreation Area.  Likewise a permit or pass issued by the Corps will not necessarily admit you into a State Park or allow you to launch at a Marina.

We regret that we cannot honor the Golden Access Pasport.  It is issued by federal agencies (including the National Park Service) who charge entrance fees and is an annual pass for entrance fees only.  The Corps does not charge entrance fees, only use fees.
